What is sustainability and why is it so important?
Sustainability is the ability to exist and develop without depleting natural resources in the future.
The United Nations defined sustainable development in the Brundtland Report as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It assumes that resources are limited and should therefore be used wisely and carefully to ensure there is enough for future generations without diminishing current quality of life. A sustainable society should be socially responsible, focusing on environmental protection and the dynamic balance within human and natural systems.
What are the three pillars of sustainability?
The concept of sustainability consists of three pillars:
- environmental,
- social,
- economic
